On-premise vs Cloud MDM: keeping your device data in your building

Super Admin · 13 Aug 2026
Most MDM products are cloud services: your device data — locations, app lists, sometimes more — lives on someone else's servers, in another country. For many businesses that is fine. For others, it is a deal-breaker. Matrix MDM runs on-premise. The management panel installs on your own server, and your device data never leaves your building. Only a small, anonymous device count goes to our licensing service so we can check your plan — never locations, never personal data, never message content. Why this matters: - Data sovereignty: regulated industries and government contracts often require data to stay in-country, or on infrastructure you control. - Privacy: your fleet's whereabouts and app inventory are yours alone. - Resilience: your panel keeps working on your network even if the wider internet is down. The trade-off is that you run the server. Matrix MDM is built for that: a single-click desktop installer, an embedded database, automatic updates, and nightly backups. You get the control of self-hosting without the usual operations burden.
